Careers and Work Experience

Careers Programme Information

During their time at The John Fisher School, students are given support in guidance so that they are ready for the work of employment when they leave. Students develop a range of skills and understanding via the PSHE programme from Years 7-11, undertaking different modules on Personal Finance, employment and interview skills.

Once in Year 10, students are supported throughout the year to help find a work experience placement in an area they are interested. In the past, students have worked in a whole range of places and roles such as The Bank of England, the BBC and local Primary Schools. Students are encouraged to pick a placement which is specific to their needs and wants, and through tutor support, are guided through this process.

In Year 11, students are given a dedicated one on one careers advice appointment with an external provider. This gives them bespoke advice as they think about their options after Year 11. Students receive impartial advice which will inform about different Sixth Form options, apprenticeships and other educational routes.

In Years 12 and 13, we run the 'Speed Careers' event. This event brings together over 40 different professions into one place, allowing students the chance to speak to Old Boys and other professionals about their career choices. Guest speakers and CV workshops are also undertaken to help boost the employability of our students.

We aim to educate and support students as they start making some very important decisions. We use a range of parental talks and external organisations to bring in fresh perspectives and give impartial advice.

Please refer to the school's Provider Access Policy Statement for further information on our Careers Programme.

Work Experience

In Year 10 our students have the opportunity to experience the world of work for a week in July.  The John Fisher School works closely with the Sutton Education Business Partnership who are part of the National Education Business Partnership. They provide support for all Work Related activities and Work Experience to help our school with administration and resources as well as carrying out vital checks on Employers who offer placements to our students. Pre-placement visits, job descriptions, insurance and risk assessments are but some of the important tasks they carry out.

Students are encouraged to find their own placement to help guide and inform them when they eventually join the world of work.  Leading up to the placement itself they learn how to develop transferrable key skills such as how to apply for jobs, communication, financial management, preparing for interviews. These skills will help them make informed and reasoned career choices. The attached PowerPoint explains in great detail the journey leading up to the week of work and a great deal of responsibility is rightly placed on the students themselves.  Follow-up work during the week is carried out by staff in school and a full debrief takes place in the last week of term enabling students to go through their log books and general experience.
