The funeral of former John Fisher student George Beresford was held at St John the Baptist church on Thursday 17th March. It is the church where George was baptised, made his first Holy Communion and was confirmed. Canon Jim, who is also a John Fisher alumni and who baptised George, was the celebrant.
There was a good representation of staff in attendance; Mr Simpson represented the current senior leadership team, and both head teachers from George’s time at the school returned for the Mass. Deacon Tony and Fr James joined Canon Jim and Deacon Errol from St Philomena’s on the sanctuary. There were a great many former John Fisher students, and parents past and present in the packed parish church.
Canon Jim spoke very touchingly about George, describing him as a ‘doer’. He likened George to the paschal candle, burning brightly, but as a candle burns, so does it shorten, as George’s length of day was also shortened.
George’s siblings, Jack and Milly spoke beautifully about him. There was no sentiment, no anguish or sadness in their words, just a great celebration of knowing and loving him, and a little annoyance on Milly’s part that he is now not able to help her with her Maths GCSE. Jack teased George for being the perfect son “so no pressure”.
George’s family are raising money for the Neurological ICU at St George’s Hospital, who cared for George and his family in their darkest hours. If you would like to make a donation you can do so here https://www.justgiving.com/GeorgeBeresford
