On Wednesday 1st March, 60 Year 9 pupils and a few Year 10 Drama pupils visited Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London to see a modernised production of the play Taming of the Shrew. If you’ve seen the Heath Ledger film ‘Ten Things I Hate About You’ – you’ll know the story line of this famous play.
The lads enjoyed the seating usually reserved for wealthy, upper-class Tudors – at the top of the Globes 3 tiers of seating, giving us an excellent view of the stage. It kept us well away from what would have been very smelly ‘Penny Stinkers’ or ‘Groundlings’ standing around the stage in Shakespeare’s time!
The performance included modern pop tracks and some excellent acting by the Royal Shakespeare theatre company – pupils were really engaged by the production, which was entertaining and full of Shakespearean humour.
In January the same pupils were prepared for their visit to the Globe by taking part in a workshop on the play with an actor from the Royal Shakespeare Company who went through the plot, characters and key lines from the play with them.
They left the Globe inspired and buzzing about the performance and about Shakespeare! Special thanks need to go to the staff who accompanied the pupils on the trip; Mr Chambers, Miss Johnstone and Mr Dean.
