Over the Easter break the John Fisher School Choir undertook a tour of Belgium where they sang in three prestigious venues to appreciative audiences.  This is the first overseas tour for a number of years and proved to be a wonderful experience for all concerned.

The Jack Petchey Foundation run a national "Speak Out Challenge" competition to all state schools. In preparation for this they offer training in Public Speaking and on Monday 23rd March thirty of our Year 10 History students were involved in this training session.

Congratulations to our intrepid Year 13 boys and staff who took on the Yorkshire Three Peak Challenge at the start of the Easter break in order to raise money for the Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation, a local charity set up in memory of a local student who died as a result of taking ecstasy.

For the second year in a row John Fisher were finalists in the Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens Open competition, the world’s largest school rugby tournament. This is a terrific achievement for the boys, along with their coaches Mr Gold and Mr Davies, and confirms our school’s status as the foremost state school in rugby.

On Wednesday 18th March, a team of nine dedicated chess players represented The John Fisher School in the English Chess Federation Secondary School Chess Tournament at Wilson’s school. For most of the boys it was the first tournament of this type that they had ever attended but the boys all worked very hard at their chess and they all enjoyed the experience.

Despite the thick cloud covering the sky, scuppering our hopes of seeing the eclipse, students were still able to learn about and contribute to studies taking part during the eclipse. John Fisher was one of the schools contributing to two BBC supported events during the day.

Welcome back to Year 10 pupil Harri Aravinthan who has spent the past seven weeks at Glenwood High School, Durban on an exchange visit. Harri, one of our most talented John Fisher cricketers, has had a fantastic experience at Glenwood – 'The Green Machine’, a school with which we have had a sports relationship with over many years.

Nine of our local primary schools met for our annual Junior School Tag Rugby Tournament at Plough Lane on Friday.

Last week, four boys took part in the Year 10 Maths Feast organised by the Further Maths Support Program. Thomas Irmiger, Thomas Starkie, Daniel Tatton and Berge Schembri travelled to Wallington Grammar School for Boys where they took part in the event which involved 15 other schools from the region.

This February a party of 41 Year 11 History students travelled to Berlin for a hugely interesting four days experience of Berlin. The German capital has, over the past century, witnessed some of the pivotal moments in world history and not always ones which reflect well. However, today Berlin is a thriving city which ensures that the lessons of the past are not forgotten.
