Congratulations to Tom Willis in Year 13 who yesterday completed the Great North Run in support of the charity SENSE which supports and campaigns for children and adults who are deafblind. Tom played rugby for the school on Saturday afternoon against Hurstpierpoint and then travelled up to Newcastle early on Sunday morning, completed the half-marathon in an impressive 1 hour and 46 minutes, before returning straight home!

Congratulations to Martyn Rooney who at last week's European Athletics Championships in Zurich won Gold in the individual 400M and the 400M Relay representing Great Britain. Martyn was a pupil at The John Fisher School from 1998 – 2005 and regularly represented the school in athletics and cross-country.

Warmest congratulations to two former John Fisher students who were both recently ordained deacons as their final step towards priesthood. Matthew O'Gorman, attended John Fisher from 1994 - 2001, is studying at the Venerable English College in Rome, and James Cadman, who joined our sixth-form in 2000 - 2001 having previously attended attended St Joseph's College, is a member of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood congregation.

Congratulations to the boys in Years 7 - 9 who were presented Achievement Awards at the special awards evening on Tuesday 15th July in front of their parents, teachers, governors and fellow pupils. The John Fisher School Achievement Awards recognise achievement and progress over the past academic year.

Last week a party of Year 10 Spanish and Business Studies pupils spent four days in Barcelona in order to enrich their understanding of Spanish culture as well as visiting a number of international businesses based in the city. The 84th English Schools Athletics Championships, the showcase event of schools' track and field, was held on Friday and Saturday at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. The John Fisher School had the largest representation of any single school representing Surrey with three pupils in the county team. Surrey finishing as the overall winners of the annual competition.

On Thursday Year 9 students laid a wreath on behalf of The John Fisher School at the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing at the nightly Last Post Ceremony on the first evening of their two-day visit to the First World War Battlefields of France & Belgium.

On Tuesday 8th July, Year 9 had a visit from the Hands On Maths Roadshow, with Frances Watson of Cambridge University. The purpose of this visit was to develop mathematical thinking and strategic reasoning skills through hands-on mathematical games, puzzles and activities. The pupils had the opportunity to engage in mathematical discussion, investigation and problem solving.

Some of the A Level geographers visited London Docklands this week specifically to study the decline and subsequent regeneration of this part of London. The visit included a talk at the Docklands Museum about the redevelopment issues by a knowledgeable member of staff who had lived in the area for 50 years and had therefore experienced the changes first hand. A number of these students are hoping to start a geography degree next year.

One of the highlights of Sixth Form Activity Week is undoubtably Question Time, which took place on Monday in our school chapel. Organised by Mr Dawkins and chaired by Mrs Englefield, five representatives from various political parties faced a range of questions posed by students in the audience in the same style as the popular BBC programme.
